Bob Fosse was a director who was fascinated with death and misery, apparently. And he likes his misery with glitter and a big spotlight: Cabaret, All That Jazz, Lenny were all very good. (I've yet to see Star 80, but plan on seeing it soon.) He's also a hell of an editor.

Jonathan Richman at the Parish this evening was just as great as he always is. He insisted the air conditioning be turned off though, so I enjoyed the show while sweating my ass off.
I really don't think anyone does what Jonathan does. He reminds me of Daniel Johnston in the way that he's affected by other art, but he doesn't seem to process it the way most people do. He just sees things and puts it through his own unique filter and it comes out great. Spanish guitar, romance languages, '50s rock 'n' roll--who else is influenced by this stuff today?
Anyway, I love him. Thanks, Jonathan Richman, for being my website's namesake.
